Embracing a No-Signature Style: Crafting Personalized Design

Not having a signature design style can be a bit of a gamble in today’s visually trend-oriented world. It’s easier to become known for a single look than it is for design that incorporates many. Truth is, I love too many different architectural styles and I believe that the interiors we design should pay homage to their exterior origins. Plus, I get bored in one lane. I love embracing Spanish, Coastal, Traditional, French, Neoclassic, Mountain Modern… So, I have embraced the individuality of each project guided by the belief that great design transcends trends and signatures. I want our designs to reflect the architecture of the home but also the unique personalities and lifestyles of our clients. That said, there have to be some guiding principles that are unique to us and our approach to design. So, here they are. These are the unifying ideas and design ingredients that inspire us from one project to the next:

Influenced by Architecture and Lifestyle

Our designs are deeply influenced by the architecture of the home and the lifestyle of our clients. We take the time to understand how you live, what you love, and how you want your space to feel. This allows us to create environments that are not only beautiful but also functional and personalized.

Clean Lines and Architectural Millwork

We have a penchant for clean lines and architectural millwork details that add a timeless elegance and character to any space. Whether it's a modern loft or a historic mansion, these elements bring a sense of structure and sophistication that can be adapted to any style.

Texture and Layers

Fabrics that add texture and layers are another hallmark of our designs. We believe that the right textiles can transform a room, adding depth and interest. Plush velvet on a sofa with a crisp linen roman shade (mwah!)? Yes, please. We select materials that complement the overall design and deepen the tactile experience of the space.

Character Antiques

The occasional character antique can bring a sense of history and personality to a room. These pieces often become focal points, telling a story and adding a layer of intrigue that new furniture simply can't replicate.

Versatility in Mood

We love shifting between moody spaces and bright, light ones. That versatility adds intrigue. You prefer the cozy, intimate atmosphere of a dark, richly decorated room but also love the airy, open feel of a light-filled space? We’re here for it and we can craft a design that resonates with your aesthetic preferences.

Whole Home Approach

Whether we are designing for a  single space or for a new build, we are mindful of the overall feel and design intention of the house as a whole. We will often make suggestions about how to unify spaces through color palette and design details or through expanding areas for better flow. When the design perspective is too narrowly focused on one space without considering its surroundings, the room can feel disjointed and outdated from its neighboring spaces.

Crafting Your Own Design Narrative

Here are some valuable tips to help you create a personalized design narrative for your home:

  1. Play to the Architecture: Take cues from the architecture of your home. Embrace its natural strengths and work with any challenges. Whether it’s high ceilings, unique windows, or an open floor plan, use these elements to guide your design choices.
  2. Reflect Your Lifestyle: Consider how you use each space and what you need from it. A design that supports your daily routines and activities will not only look good but also enhance your quality of life.
  3. Embrace Texture and Layers: Mix and match fabrics, materials, and finishes to add depth and interest to your rooms. Think about how different textures interact and complement each other.
  4. Incorporate Personal Touches: Include items that have personal meaning to you, whether it's a piece of art, a family heirloom, or a travel souvenir. These elements will make your space feel uniquely yours.
  5. Play with Mood: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different moods in different areas of your home. A variety of atmospheres can add richness and complexity to your overall design.
  6. Seek Balance: Balance is key in design. Whether you’re mixing modern and traditional elements or balancing bold colors with neutrals, aim for a harmonious composition.
  7. Zoom Out: No one space lives in isolation of the rest. Each space flows into the next so consider a design palette and architectural influence that’s consistent throughout the house for a cohesive, unifying look. It can make a home feel like it's intentional in design rather than an afterthought.
